People get wrinkles on the skin and gray hair when they grow old. The actual ageing process takes place inside the body. The efficiency of the body cells goes down over the years. At some point of time, muscles start shrinking. sense organs like the eye and ear grow weak, and the body's general energy level dips. Many old people appear confused; others remain alert till the end. In some cultures, old people take leave of their loved ones and go into solitude until death.

Man has been trying to find an answer to this question ever since he has become aware about the preciousness of his life. Almost all cultures and religions of the world believe in some form of life after death. Islam, Christianity, and Judaism uphold the concept of the immortality of the soul and blissful life after death in paradise. Other religions, such as Hinduism, say that the dead are reborn on the Earth. Some even believe that the deceased remain among their loved ones for quite some time after death, as they initially do not realize that they have crossed the mortal threshold. However, no one has yet been able to give concrete proof about life after death.

Cemeteries are places of rest and reflection. Here we are supposed to ruminate on our deceased friends and family members. Cemeteries are quiet places as people go there for peace and solitude. In Mexico, on the other hand, the dead are commemorated in an exuberant festival. A picnic is arranged around the graves of the dead on All Saints' Day or Dia de los Muertos. On this day, shops sell sweets in the shape of skeletons, and dishes meant both for the living as well as for the souls of the dead are prepared. In many cultures, there are no cemeteries at all. Thus coping with the death of loved ones differs in accordance with cultural and religious beliefs.
How can one cope with the death of a loved one?
The death of a person is an event that usually triggers a feeling of deep loss, grief, and sometimes also anger and despair. But it also gives us a realization of the harsh realities of life. Many mourners try to find consolation in their religions or in the company of others who have had a similar experience. In general, overcoming the death of a loved one is a difficult and painful process. But it is important to come back to normal life as early as possible.

But this should be done only if the patient expresses his/her wish for it. If the patient is unconscious or is no longer in a position to decide, the team of doctors and family members can obtain legal permission to take the decision on his behalf. However, this is often a very difficult task for the family members.
