INTRODUCTION
Do you judge people by how they look? Outward appearances are usually deceptive. It is
not always correct to make a judgement about anything based
on external appearance only. In real life, many crooks by their outward attitude and behaviour, make themselves appear to be gentlemen and noble people just like the potter in this story....
Appearances can be Deceptive - look beyond
Once upon a time there lived a potter in a village. Whatever little money he earned, he spent it on eating and drinking.
One day, when he was in an inebriated state, he fell on a
Pitcher and got a deep wound on his forehead. The wound healed after sometime but it
Was
Just a big scar mark on his forehead. After a few years of that incident, there was a famine in that area. The villagers had to leave for another country in search of some source of livelihood. The potter also left for another country so that he could find a job.
After travelling for a few days, the potter reached the other country. Soon, the potter was quite lucky to find a job at the palace of the king. When the king saw the scar mark on the potter's forehead, he thought that the potter must have been a good warrior because such scar marks were supposed to be the signs of battle weariness.
He was much impressed with the potter and began to give extra respect to the potter.
The potter also enjoyed the extra care and respect from the king and never told him the truth of the scar. He got frequent promotions and was made an esteemed courtier in the king's court. The potter was very happy with his new found status and enjoyed it.
One day, the enemy kingdom waged a war against this kingdom. The king asked the potter to lead his army from the next day, because he wanted some really brave person to lead the army.
That might the potter could not sleep for he did not even know how to mount a horse leave alone fighting the battle. Next morning, he rushed to the king and told him the truth, that he was not a warrior but a simple potter.

He told the whole story of the scar mark. The king was not annoyed with
the potter when he disclosed the truth, rather he was highly embarrassed by his ignorance and realised that only external appearances are not enough to judge a person In the above story, the king over estimated the worth of the potter based on his external appearance, Similarly, there may be instances when we under estimate the worth of a
person simply because he is not well dressed or is not physically attractive.

A lady in a faded gingham dress and her husband dressed in a homespun threadbare suit, stepped off the train in Boston and walked timidly without an appointment into the Harvard University President's outer office. The secretary could tell in a moment that such country people had no business at Harvard
University and probably did not even deserve to be in a renowned university like Harvard.
We want to see the President," the man said softly.
"He will be busy all day," the secretary snapped.
"We will wait the lady replied
For hours, the secretary ignored them, hoping that the couple would finally be discouraged and
Leave .
They did not and the secretary grew frustrated and finally decided to disturb the President.
"May be if you see them for a few minutes, they will leave," she said to him. He sighed in exasperation and nodded. Someone of his importance obviously did not have time to spend with them.
The President, stern faced and with dignity, strutted towards the couple. The lady told him, "We had a son who attended Harvard University for one year. He loved Harvard University and he was happy here. But about a year ago, he was accidentally killed. My husband and I would like to erect a memorial to him, somewhere on the campus.
The President was not touched... he was shocked.
Madam" he said gruffly, "We can't put up a statue for every person who attended arvard University and died. If we did, this place would look like a cemetry."
Oh no ! the lady exclaimed quickly. He glanced at the gingham dress and homespun suit nd then explained, "A building! Do you have any idea how much a building costs? We ave our seven and a half million dollars in the physical buildings here at Harvard university
For a moment the lady was silent.
the lady then turned to her husband and said quietly, "Is that all it costs to start a niversity? Why don't we just start our own?"
Her husband nodded.
The President's face turned white in confusion. Mr. and Mrs. Stanford got up and walked away, travelling to Palo Alto, California, where they established the university that bears their name, Stanford University, a memorial to a son that Harvard University no longer cared about.
There is much more to a person beyond the way he or she looks or carries himself. Indeed the first impressions are important but it may not present the real worth or value of a person. Do not judge a person on the basis of external appearance or attribute only. Your ideas and thoughts about a person or object should not be based only on what you see, or how the person or object looks like, what they wear or how they act. Something can be very different outside than it is inside. Judge others by their character and inner qualities more, rather than outward appearances.
