People who are educated have a better chance of doing well
in life. An educated person also has better understanding of what is going on in the world and why. Education and knowledge are imparted primarily in school-often practical training at a workplace also contributes to your knowledge. After graduating from school you can go for a professional programme, or you can study further at a university. Unfortunately, many children are unable to go to school because their parents cannot afford it.
What is the difference between a professional training
programme and a university course?
Professional training is given at a vocational school, and prepares you for a job. In a university, you can study academic courses which may not necessarily have practical value. In some countries, you can do a professional training programme, such as car mechanics, baking, or cabinet making after nine years of schooling. In some countries training can be done after passing middle school. For studying at a university, however, you will need to complete all years of schooling.

Many of us know as children what we want to become. Earlier, children wanted to be engineers, pilots, nurses, and fashion designers- but now the choices may be different. Before choosing a profession, you should always ask yourself a few questions: What dol enjoy doing? Can I earn a living through this? What can I do really well? Your answers could be mathematics or dealing with people, wood carving, or a PC game. Almost all inclinations and capabilities can lead to a profession, but often this may not be apparent. You can then go to an expert for advice.
Can one work without completing the school?
You can find work without completing school, but it is quite difficult. There are a few jobs that do not need academic knowledge, but they are very few. In addition, the work-mostly heavy physical work-is usually not paid very well. For most of the professions, you will need to complete your schooling, or at best complete a professional training programme or a university course.

Not all children in Africa are as lucky as these. Many never go to school because either schools are very far or their parents do not have money.
What does one learn in practical training ?
A student internship or practical training programme is supposed to help students find out the right profession for them. You can get insights into the profession or the trade through an internship. In a good practical training programme
lot of things are explained and shown, for instance, different areas of a company, called departments, and where jobs are done there. Sometimes, student interns are made to do uninteresting jobs like photocopying or making coffee the whole day. If that happens, you should politely request for a transfe to another department.
How do children learn in Africa?

Many African children go to a normal school, but there are others who either never go or go only for a few years. Many parents cannot pay for the school, so the children have to work and help their parents in feeding the family. In some poor or war-stricken countries, there are not even proper school buildings. The children study in open, sitting on the ground, often without school books, blackboard, chalk, and pencils. It is wonderful to see that despite all this they still have lessons to learn because they realize that education helps them to have a better future.
